Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Boston Owner’s Guide

If your Copperfield damper won’t open, won’t fully close, or has started rattling every time the wind shifts, we stock and install Copperfield-compatible damper replacement parts throughout Boston, with most repairs priced between $380 and $740 installed. We carry replacement damper assemblies, cable sets, and mounting hardware on our trucks, so in most Boston homes the swap is done in one visit. The way owners usually find us: the damper worked fine for years, then one winter it got stiff, then it froze, then the cable snapped or the plate bent, and cold air started pouring down the flue whenever the fireplace wasn’t running.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes two primary damper families: top-sealing dampers, which mount at the crown and seal with a rubber gasket, and throat dampers, which sit just above the firebox on a cast-iron frame. The top-sealers, particularly the Copperfield TS series, are the ones we most often repair in Boston because they live outside, exposed to freeze-thaw cycles, snow melt, and the salt air that rolls in off the harbor. The gasket degrades, the cable spring loses tension, and the lid starts to sit cocked. The throat dampers fail differently: warped plates, cracked castings, stripped pivot pins.

Here is the compatibility gotcha we run into weekly in Boston: Copperfield changed cable routing on newer top-sealing models, and a cable set from a 2012 unit will not fit a unit built after roughly 2017, even if the damper opening measures the same. If the data plate on your damper is still legible, take a photo before you call. If it isn’t, we measure the flue, the bolt pattern, and the cable entry angle on site. For Copperfield specifically, we recommend OEM parts over generic aftermarket. The aftermarket gaskets we have seen don’t hold the same compression set, and a damper that doesn’t seat tight is a damper that isn’t doing its job. Corrine Halstead’s crew has installed enough of both to know the difference shows up by the second Boston winter.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing
  • The damper plate only opens halfway before binding. This usually means the cable is fraying inside the sleeve or the pivot bearings have worn to the point the plate tilts off-axis. Forcing it the rest of the way often shears the cable end fitting.
  • You feel a cold draft coming down the chimney when the damper should be closed. On top-sealing models, the rubber gasket has compressed hard or cracked, or the lid is no longer pulling down square. You are heating the Boston sky.
  • The control handle or cable moves, but nothing happens up top. The cable has either snapped or detached at the pulley. This is the most common failure we see on Boston triple-deckers where the flue is tall and the cable run is long and the angle from the firebox to the crown puts constant side-load on the connection.
  • You hear a rattle or ping when the wind gusts, even with the damper shut. The lid has warped slightly, the gasket has shrunk, or the mounting brackets have loosened where they fasten to the crown. It may seal fine some days and leak air others.
  • There’s water staining inside the firebox after rain. A failed top-sealing damper gasket is a common entry point for Boston’s driving rain. The firebox wets, the damper frame rusts, and the problem compounds.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

To be direct about pricing, as our whole operation is built on that: a Copperfield damper repair in Boston typically runs $380 to $740 installed, depending on what failed. A cable and pulley replacement on a top-sealing model usually falls in the $380 to $450 range. A full damper plate assembly with new gasket runs closer to $520 to $640. A complete top-sealing unit, when the plate is cracked or the frame has corroded past saving, is $640 to $740 installed.

That price includes the part, the labor, the trip, and the camera check of the flue above and below the damper so we can confirm the repair sealed correctly and nothing else is failing while we’re on the roof. You get the written price before we start, per Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and a written warranty on the work when we’re done. We have sourced Copperfield parts through the Haven buying network since 2009 specifically so the customer price stays honest, not padded with runaround.

If your damper is sticking, you can safely check the cable path from the firebox side: look for kinks, corrosion, or a handle that’s bottoming out before the plate moves. What we do not recommend is pulling the damper plate or the cable assembly as a DIY repair on a top-sealing model. You’re working at the crown, the damper is under spring tension, and a plate that slips while you’re leaning over the flue is a fast way to a serious hand injury or a fall. This is a roof-height spring-loaded part. The risk is real, not hypothetical.

If what you’re seeing is a crusty cable or a damper that clanks when it moves, call us at (857) 567-8887. We’ll tell you over the phone what the likely repair range is for your Copperfield model, then confirm it with a written price on site before anything gets unbolted.
