Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Crown Repair: The Boston Owner’s Guide

If you have an Olympia Chimney system and the crown is cracked, spalling, or pulling away from the flue, we stock Olympia-compatible crown materials on our trucks and typically complete a full crown repair in Boston for $850-$1,450 installed, depending on the crown’s square footage and the condition of the flue beneath it. We write the price before any work starts, and we document the crown with camera photos before and after, so you can see exactly what was repaired. Most Boston owners discover the failure the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near the chimney, or a rusted damper that won’t open smoothly. The crown is the concrete cap at the top of the chimney, and once it cracks, water gets into the chase and starts working on everything below it.

The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we. If the crown is gone, we’ll show you the photo. If it can wait a season, we’ll tell you that too.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney builds prefabricated and masonry chimney components for both wood-burning and gas applications. The crown we’re talking about is the cast-in-place concrete or pre-cast cap that seals the top of a masonry chimney chase, or the factory crown on an Olympia prefab termination. If you have an Olympia stainless steel chase cover with a cast crown skirt, that’s the part we see fail most often on Boston rooflines, because the freeze-thaw cycle here is merciless on cast material.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Olympia does not make a universal crown. The original crown dimensions are tied to the outside dimensions of your flue tile and the chase top, not to a model number stamped anywhere easy to read. On a masonry chimney, we measure the flue tile OD and the crown’s overall footprint in inches before we form or order a replacement. On an Olympia prefab unit, the crown is part of the termination assembly, and swapping it usually means replacing the whole cap assembly, not just re-mortaring the visible lip. We’ll match the correct profile against the termination series marked on the flue label, and if the label is gone, we’ll pull dimensions and match against Olympia’s current termination charts. Aftermarket replacement crowns from other manufacturers can work, but we’ve seen enough fitment issues with third-party castings that we prefer to form the crown on site when the chase is masonry, and use Olympia components directly when it’s a prefab unit.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Spalling concrete on the crown surface. That’s the crown surface flaking off in thin layers. Water has penetrated the top of the concrete, and every freeze cycle pops a little more off. A spalled crown can’t be ignored in Boston, because the damage compounds every winter.
  • A hairline crack running between the flue tile and the crown edge. This is the classic entry point for water. The crack may look trivial from the ground, but it lets water straight down along the flue tile, where it pools in the smoke shelf and accelerates mortar breakdown.
  • Rusted or seized damper hardware. The damper sits below the flue, not above it, so when it rusts, the water is coming from above. A rusty damper is often the first interior sign that the crown has already failed.
  • Water staining on the ceiling or wall adjacent to the chimney chase. By the time the stain is visible, water has been migrating for months. The crown is the most common source, but we verify with the camera before we touch anything.
  • Efflorescence, the white chalky deposit on the brick below the crown. That white mineral bloom is water moving through the masonry, dissolving salts, and depositing them on the surface. It means the crown’s seal at the brick line has opened up.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Replacing an Olympia Chimney crown in Boston runs $850 to $1,450 installed. The range comes down to three things: the condition of the upper flue tile, the crown’s footprint in square feet, and whether the old crown needs full removal or can be re-formed over a stable base. A small, intact masonry crown with no flue-tile damage sits at the lower end. A wide crown with spalling flue tile and a rusted chase cover sits at the higher end.

What’s included in the price: we remove the failed crown material, inspect and prep the chase, form and pour a new crown with a proper drip edge and expansion joint around the flue tile, and apply a breathable crown sealer. Every job includes a documented photo record, written scope, and written warranty before anyone starts, in line with Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, which has required a photo record on every job since 2009. We also note any flue damage we find while we’re up there, because leaving it unrepaired just gives water a second path in.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the crown yourself if you have a ladder and a clear, flat access point. Look for spalling, cracks wider than a dime, and separation at the flue tile. What you should not do is attempt a crown repair from a ladder without the right fall protection and material knowledge. Crown work requires mixing concrete to the right slump, forming a proper slope away from the flue, and building the drip edge, the overhang that keeps water from running straight down the brick. Get any of it wrong and you’ve created a new water path, not closed one.

If you’re not comfortable getting eyes on it, call us at (857) 567-8887. We’ll put a camera on the crown, show you the photo, and give you a written price before any work starts.
